If you are not quite sure what qualifies as steampunk, the answer might be found below. The images below are all in the realm of steampunk, and give a pretty good idea what works. Usually about 25% of our audience comes dressed in steampunk attire. We hope you’ll be one of them!
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery rather than modern technology, and it is often set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy version of the British Victorian era. It has been heavily influenced by science fiction writers such as H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. It is fantasy, mixed with adventure, with romantic historical fiction blended in and served on a silver platter, from a wicker picnic basket in a meadow in the home counties on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Steampunk has been described as a genre that reminisces about a time that never was, from a future that will never be. Beyond mere cosplay, steampunk goes into story telling, fashion and technology. It’s also one of the few genres that allows an almost burlesque approach, while not being excessively suggestive.
Visitors to The Harlequin Hypnosis Show sometimes choose to dress in Steampunk styles, but not doing so does not detract from the enjoyment of the show. We generally have a costume competition, and people enjoy either being a part of it or watching.
If there is an underlying theme in steampunk, it is where fun and fantasy interect, in something resembling a Victorian world.
